Project overview

mapIn Egypt, it is a priority subject to achieve qualitative improvement of the teaching method by transitioning from the traditional memorization approach. To help this transition, JICA has implemented a mini-project for Improvement of Science and Mathematics Education in Primary Schools together with the National Center for Educational Research and Development (NCERD), which acted as the executing agency in Egypt, from 1997 to 2000. Hokkaido University of Education sent experts and supported editing of the Guide Book (GB) of elementary school science and mathematics education for teachers, mainly for researchers specializing in mathematics and science at NCERD.
This project was started from 2003 in order to establish and advocate a new science and mathematics education method in accordance with the above GB. This university has organized a science and mathematics GB revision team along with revisions of textbooks in Egypt. It has also verified the effectiveness of the new GB in collaboration with the Hokkaido Board of Education by selecting four schools in Cairo City as model schools and experimenting with the teaching method at these model schools to ensure that the Egyptian children can think and find answers by themselves. Additionally, teacher training was provided for science and mathematics teachers in Cairo province, and efforts have been made to ensure its certain implementation.
The effectiveness of this new teaching method has been proved by exam scores after the project implementation and questionnaire surveys conducted at open school events, which revealed increased interest and comprehension, and improved understanding level among children. Even today, training is being conducted voluntarily by teachers in Cairo City.
